I was talking to RevEric on the phone earlier today. During our conversation, he mentioned something about "the Unholy Trinity," namely, "Me, Myself, and I."

I don't think he invented this expression, but it is a good thing to ponder. In society, it seems that Christians are sometimes following the Holy Trinity (God) and sometimes following the Unholy Trinity (their own self will). I have reflected upon that, and wished to share this with the Community.

Oh, RevEric's living arrangements are finally settling down.  Maybe he will be able to visit the forum a little more than he has lately. Although I doubt he will EVER be able to devote as much time as he once did. The demands upon a priest are much greater even than a Seminiarian (and that's a LOT).

Actually, I think I said the "not so holy trinity" in reference to myself (out of personal preference I tend to limit the use of the term "unholy" to the devil and demonic activity).  But aside from that, David's insights are correct in that one of the ongoing challenges of Christianity is to live a life based on "God's will be done" and not "my will be done."  Humanity has grappled with this since the fall from the Garden of Eden.

My living arrangements have indeed settled down but my ministry has definitely picked up.  The people in Macon are starting to get to know me and I am starting to get a lot more appointments and requests for services (which, of course, is a good thing).

God bless,
-Rev. Eric

Hey guys,

This idea of the Christian challenge to deny Me, Myself, and I and to serve the Lord has great practical application to our lives, me thinks.  This is personally my greatest obstacle to giving myself totally to God's will.  When I really reflect upon it, I usually find that even when I do God's will I sometimes do it because there is something in it for me.  In other words, it's tough for me to do something just for God, and not for me too.  I struggle with this every day.  Thanks for the insight.  It helps.

When the scribe asked Jesus which was the first of all the commandment (Mk 12:28-34), He told the scribe it was
Quote
"The Lord your God is Lord alone.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.  The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Who is usually in direct contradiction to these commandments but Me, Myself, and I?

Good thoughts all.

At last week's Bible class, the teacher pointed out that we often give Satan the credit for what has really been our failings.

The real enemy is sometimes ourselves, he said.

Which is why dying to oneself is so necessary I guess.

Good on the first two & Sad on the last two. I know that Rev. Eric gave us a lot of time even when he was a Seminarian. I also know that the family appreciated it. And that God appreciated it more and Will def. bless him mightily for it.

Thanks Fr. Eric Smiley

Blessings,
