Full article at Foxnews

Pope John Paul II was criticized by Paul Spiegel, the head of Germany's Central Council of Jews for comments in his book comparing abortion to the murder of Jews by the Nazis.  More specifically, Mr. Spiegel was quoted as saying that the Roman Catholic Church "has not understood or does not want to understand that there is a tremendous difference between factory-like genocide and what women do to their bodies."

I disagree with Mr. Spiegel.  I think the pope has it right.

Anyone have other comments?

The newspaper article says that

Quote
the pope draws a broad comparison between abortion and the Holocaust, saying both came about when people decided to usurp "the law of God."

Note it's a Broad Comparison ... and note that what the pope is saying is that they resulted out of a similar situation (people going against the law of God) and not that they were the same thing...

Not having read the book myself, it's not easy to make more comments, but based on the record of the Holy Pope, it's more likely than not that he did get it right & that Mr. Spiegel isn't.

I believe in the Pope's authority over the Church of God & his position as being ordained by God and that he is hence mightily annointed for his ministry.

Blessings,

Melody

I agree with you Melody.

Personally, I would take the comparison even further than the Pope did.  Not only do they result from similar situations, but they result from the same attitude about the worth and purpose of human life.  They also seem to be a manifestation of the same philosophy regarding human life.

Mr Spiegel doesn't appreciate the pope's comparison because he devalues the humanity of the fetus.  It's ironic because the Nazis had to devalue the humanity of the Jews in order to carry out their "final solution."
