Hi Guys! Lots of news floating around about this book called the Da Vinci Code which is apparently very controversial and critical of the Church. Have any one of you read this book? Any comments?

Hi royston,

Great to hear from you again!  I have not read the book so I only know what I do about it from other's commentaries.  To my understanding the basic premise of the book is that Mary Magdalene is the "beloved disciple," not John, and that she married Christ and had his child. It also promotes the idea that Jesus is not God, just a man.

It is not based on historical evidence and the book is really a work of fiction.  The bottomline is that this premise is un-Scriptural.  The part that makes the Church looks bad is that supposedly the Catholic Church knows the truth and covers it up.

Even Christians who are no friend of Catholicism will find this work of fiction far fetched and anti-Scriptural.  The book is not meant to be a historical record, but a work of fiction.  Many readers have taken it to be based on some real historical facts though.  It also adds to those conspiracy theories about the Catholic Church.

If you do a Google search on Gnostic and feminist gospels with Mary Magdalene you'll find where the book gets it's basic theology.  This is really a resurfacing of old heresies.  It's sad, because Mary Magdelene was truly a saintly woman who loved Jesus as her Lord and Saviour.

Take my commentary for what it's worth.  I have not read the book, but found out what the book is about from sources both for and against it.  If you want a more thorough critique of the book from a Catholic perspective, read the analysis at Catholic.com.

Hey Royston Smiley

Great to see you after such a long time!

And great question. I was asked just four days ago about this book & had no answer to give except that I knew it contained stuff that was against the Catholic Church.

Thx to Seeker's link, I am shocked to see the rotten extent Author Dan Brown has gone to!

Quote
The problem is that many of the ideas that the book promotes are anything but fact, and they go directly to the heart of the Catholic faith. For example, the book promotes these ideas:

*Jesus is not God; he was only a man.
*Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.
*She is to be worshiped as a goddess.
*Jesus got her pregnant, and the two had a daughter.
*That daughter gave rise to a prominent family line that is still present in Europe today.
*The Bible was put together by a pagan Roman emperor.
*Jesus was viewed as a man and not as God until the fourth century, when he was deified by the emperor Constantine.
*The Gospels have been edited to support the claims of later Christians.
*In the original Gospels, Mary Magdalene rather than Peter was directed to establish the Church.
*There is a secret society known as the Priory of Sion that still worships Mary Magdalene as a goddess and is trying to keep the truth alive.
*The Catholic Church is aware of all this and has been fighting for centuries to keep it suppressed. It often has committed murder to do so.
*The Catholic Church is willing to and often has assassinated the descendents of Christ to keep his bloodline from growing.

Also got to learn a lot about "Opus Dei" which Author Dan Brown describes in his "Bizarre True Facts from the Da Vinci Code"

Quote
243 Lexington Avenue, New York
The Vatican prelature known as Opus Dei is a deeply devout Catholic sect that has become controversial recently due to allegations of brainwashing, coercion, and a dangerous practice known as "corporal mortification." Opus Dei has recently completed construction of a $47 million, 133,000-square-foot American Headquarters at 243 Lexington Avenue in New York City.

This actually is a whole lot of rubbish!! (As is most of the book  smiley ) as proved by Opus Dei's web here (worth a read along with the link Seeker provided)

Perhaps the most riduculous thing of all, is Dan Brown's answer to the question:

Quote
ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?
Yes. Interestingly, if you ask three people what it means to be Christian, you will get three different answers. Some feel being baptized is sufficient. Others feel you must accept the Bible as immutable historical fact. Still others require a belief that all those who do not accept Christ as their personal savior are doomed to hell. Faith is a continuum, and we each fall on that line where we may. By attempting to rigidly classify ethereal concepts like faith, we end up debating semantics to the point where we entirely miss the obvious--that is, that we are all trying to decipher life's big mysteries, and we're each following our own paths of enlightenment. I consider myself a student of many religions. The more I learn, the more questions I have. For me, the spiritual quest will be a life-long work in progress.

Yes, very Christian indeed  evil

Blessings on all who've read the book (& those that haven't, praise God),

Hey all,

Had this 'inspiration' like thing the other day, as if the 'Da Vinci Code' is Satan's revenge after the high success of 'The Passion of the Christ'. It was as if so many people who hadn't fully grasped just how much Jesus Christ had done for them, now did at least partially, thanks to the movie.

And this book definetely has had enough of a world wide success to even out that, with tons of lies against Christ and Christianity and Catholicism.

Then today I read this bit of info...

Hmmm.

The battle's already won and it belongs to our God, no matter what things may seem like. Amen? Amen.

Blessings,

Amazingly this work of fiction is treated as the Gospel by many, while the Gospel is treated as a work of fiction.

A Priest who has read it... said "it is only a novel"...  while another Priest  said
"and the Grand Canyon is only a hole in the ground... and baseball is only a game"

I don't think it is necessary to read the book to disclaim it..   There are a few good
commentaries already in print... one is "The Da Vinci Hoax" can't remember the name of the author... but he gives point by point disclaimers.

My friend just got back from visiting France and the relics of St.Mary Magdalene
The flesh is still incorrupt on her forehead where Jesus touched her... after He called her by name in the Garden.   She is obviously not a goddess... but as a member of The Mystical Body of Christ.... she went out to meet her Groom and partake in the Wedding Feast of The Lamb.
