Hello Everyone,
I have decided to start a new thread to continue a discussion found under the topic "On Whom the Church is Founded?". As such, it is an invitation to Ayodhya to elaborate further upon a statement he made. Of course other people should feel free to participate in the discussion.
In that other discussion, Ayodhya, you said:
Since the true church is founded on Jesus Christ, we should find a church that does not preach another salvation based on works and sacraments, but one which has as its base the Holy Bible, and the one name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved.
First of all, let me say that from the Catholic view, works and sacraments are tied in with the salvation provided by Christ. These ideas have been discussed under other threads in the apologetics forum, and we can hash them out further in those threads if you desire.
Secondly, I think that everyone in the Glorify God Community believes in the salvation under the name of Jesus Christ. So there is no debate here as far as I am concerned.
But I would like to focus on your comment on having a Church that "has as its base the Holy Bible."
The Catholic Church believes that there are three bases, Scripture, Sacred Tradition and Magesterial Teaching (i.e., the teaching office of the Church on matters of faith and morals).
Obviously, considering your past posts, you do not hold with the Catholic position, and accept the bible as the one and only base a church should have.
Even though you have not yet used the term "Sola Scriptura", that has been the measure of truth that you have used throughout your posts. By "Sola Scriptura" I mean the doctrine that the bible alone is to be a person's guide in terms of the Christian Faith.
So each time in your past posts when you critized Catholic teaching for not being found in the bible, you were appealing to the Doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Furthermore, when you stated that one should have a church with the bible as its base (and not things such as church authority and sacraments) you were appealing to the Doctrine of Sola Scriptura. In other words, the basic theme throughout your posts has been that the Catholic Church teaches things in violation of the Doctrine of Sola Scriptura.
If I am mistaken about your beliefs in this matter then please take a moment to clarify your position for me.
But if you are a supporter of Sola Scriptura then I invite you to explain in this thread why a person should accept the bible as the only source of Christian teaching.
And, of course, there is an open invitation for anyone else to do the same.
I would like the Glorify God Community to have a good, honest, open discussion about Sola Scriptura and see if we can get to the heart of the matter. If we don't, then we will simply keep dancing around the issue throughout all the other apologetic posts.
God bless,
-Rev. Eric
